On November 8th, the Friday of Veterans’ Day weekend, ALLIES members joined students at Fletcher including many of the military fellows and Fletcher veterans in a day of service at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans in downtown Boston. The event was planned and facilitated by Terrence Stinson, the Chief of Staff of the Office of Policy and Planning at the Department of Veterans Affairs and a former Army officer. Students were able to organize items for the general store that serves the over 300 inhabitants of the shelter and serve food to veterans at that night’s meal. In addition to being able to aid the shelter with operations, students were also able to tour the facility and learn about the different programs available at the center aimed at providing veterans with health care, vocational skills, and mental health services in addition to housing. It was an experience many participants expressed interest in repeating in following semesters.
